How This Book Came About
"Black Blind and Female: It started out with just me writing as a response to a trip I took to Sedona, Arizona in 2010. I went to Sedona Arizona with two of friends of mine, but we were going because one of our friends was terminally ill. She (ill friend) wanted to go there before she got too sick to travel. While I was in Sedona, I met with some energy healers, and one of them told me that my mother wanted me to forgive her. That's what started Black Blind and Female. It was my forgiveness process of me forgiving my mother."
"I'm adopted, I had two adoptive families. The mother that was asking for forgiveness was the second mother that adopted me. By 2010 I did not know that I had been adopted twice. I found that out later, when Black, Blind, and Female was close to being published."
"Once my friend that I went to Sedona with passed away in 2011, I realized that I wasn't just telling my story. I was telling parts of her story that we had in common. I wanted to dedicate this book to her and so I came up with the title "Black, Blind, and Female" about three days before she passed away. I told her that I chose that name because we were both black, blind, and female."
"When I told one of my relatives that I was going to write a book, he said "You need to know about your birth mother". At that point I was Forty-One and had never wanted to hear my birth story. The life that I had before I was adopted the second time. I was four years old. That life was just so hard that I wasn't interested in finding out who my birth family was, I was busy trying to survive the life I was already in."
"When he told me my birth mother was a young girl that was a very good singer and got pregnant with me. She lost her ticket to stardom because they didn't want to deal with a pregnant girl. When I was born, she took out her anger on me, and that is how I lost my eyesight."
"That was the story he told me. That was the Story that galvanized me to look for my birth story. I was convinced I had to find that girl, this woman who would take out her frustration on an innocent child. Because of what she did, I ended up in the foster homes. I went looking for her because I thought it was her fault."
